Laser Cutting Your First Shapes

Massachusetts College of Art and Design

MassArt Continuing Ed: January 2018

In this two-day workshop students learn the basics of using a CO2 Laser Cutter to transform their hand drawings into laser cut pieces in a variety of materials. The continuity of the hand-drawn line is an important part of the process of using technology and fabrication equipment to supplement a studio practice. Using Adobe software and mobile apps to prepare files, and materials including masonite, frosted mylar, and colored acrylic, students gain an understanding of how the laser cutter can be integrated into a range of studio art making practices. Applications of laser cut shapes and multiples shown by the instructor inspire students to continue using the laser cutter beyond the weekend workshop.
